Wishard Health Services

Ophthalmology Clinic Renovation

Applied provided mechanical and electrical engineering design services in conjunction with ArcDesign to renovate and expand the Ophthalmology Clinic at Wishard Health Services. The project, located on the fifth floor of the Regenstrief Building on the Wishard Health Services campus, consisted of twelve exam rooms, a minor procedure room, laser room, optic room, separate public and prisoner waiting areas, check-in/check-out areas, office space and clinic support spaces covering an area of approximately 7,400 square feet. Due to the land-locked nature of the existing clinic, the project was completed in three phases.

New dual duct terminal units with DDC controls were installed to provide twenty-one (21) thermal zones. The existing exhaust systems were modified and extended to meet the exhaust requirements for the project. The existing electrical and lighting systems for the clinic were upgraded and expanded. The existing fire alarm system was modified and additional devices were added. A new visual-only nurse call system was provided. The existing sanitary, vent and domestic water systems were modified and expanded to meet the project needs.  The estimated construction cost is $1,200,000 and the project was completed in September 2008.

Bloomington Hospital Orange County

Emergency Department Expansion

The project includes updating the interior and exterior to give the hospital a bold new look. A new lobby and covered canopy will also be added. This expansion will provide more space in the existing hospital to increase the size of the Emergency Department.

A 100% outside air constant volume hot water reheat system is being installed to serve the renovated portion of the Emergency Department. A second small DX rooftop unit will serve the new cafeteria. The existing plumbing system is being modified and increased to provide new plumbing fixtures throughout the expansion. The existing fire alarm and nurse call systems will be replaced and integrated into the new hospital-wide systems. The backbone for a new direct digital control system will also be provided. Three of the new exam rooms are being designed to function as isolation rooms. Applied Engineering Services worked in conjunction with the architect, Cooler Design, to provide the mechanical, electrical and pluming (MEP) design.  The construction budget for this project is $1,800,000 and the project was completed in December 2009.

Major Hospital

ReNovo Orthopaedics Center

Applied Engineering Services teamed with RATIO Architects to provide the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design for this new 25,000-square-foot medical office building. About half of the building includes physician’s offices (orthopedics and sports medicine), and about half is for physical therapy space (Major Hospital SportsMed). Design for this project began in March 2008 and construction was completed in September 2009. Runnebohm Construction provided Construction Management services. The estimated construction cost is $5,000,000.

Major Hospital

Building Assessment Study

Applied Engineering Services was retained by William S. Major hospital, located in Shelbyville IN, to provide a written assessment of the building condition of the main hospital and to identify the capital cost necessary to keep the building operating for an additional 20 years. The report included mainly mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems assessment, but also included some architectural analysis of the building. RATIO Architects was retained on the project to assist with the architectural aspects of the report.

The report included a written narrative of the systems used in the building and a cost summary of each system divided into primary sub-categories (heating water pumps, heat exchangers, piping, etc.). A replacement cost was assigned to each sub-category and a life expectancy measured in years was applied to identify a potential capital replacement cost in the future. The report contained a summary of the capital replacement cost needs of the building which will be $14,600,000 (including inflation) over the 20-year period.

The preliminary report was completed in December of 2008 and is currently under review by the Owner. In addition to incorporating final adjustments to the report, Applied attended a board meeting in July 2009 to review and explain the report.

Fairmont General Hospital Healthplex

MEP Engineering Design for 66,000-SF Healthplex in Fairmont, WV

This project includes the mechanical and electrical (MEP) engineering design for the new 66,000-square-foot Healthplex Building located in Fairmont, West Virginia. The building includes a 30,000-square-foot fitness center with a swimming pool and 36,000 square feet of clinical and medical office building space. Four air handling systems with DX cooling and electric heat serve the building. One is a pool dehumidification unit with air and water side heat recovery. The electrical design includes a 2,000 amp, 480/277V electrical service, interior and site lighting, fire alarm system, paging and provision for voice and data service. The plumbing design includes a domestic water system complete with water softeners and central hot water, sanitary and storm system, and fire protection. The project is being built by a developer, and the team includes a construction manager. The design process has successfully reconciled the design with the construction cost budget. The architect is Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf (BDMD). Construction was completed in 2008. Estimated construction cost: $13.7 million.

Medical Center Hospital

Center for Health and Wellness

The Medical Center Hospital (MCH) Center for Health and Wellness was designed as a new health care facility in Odessa, Texas. The Center for Health and Wellness is part of a new trend combining fitness, therapy and physician services under one roof. Applied worked as a sub-consultant to Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf (BDMD) to provide the mechanical and electrical (MEP) engineering design for this new 69,000-square-foot facility. The building includes a 25,000-square-foot fitness center with both a lap pool and therapy pool. Another 44,000 square feet is reserved for clinical and medical office building space.

The MEP systems were designed to be easily maintained and automatically operated. Five air handling systems with DX cooling and electric heat serve the building. One air handler is a 7,300 cfm pool dehumidification unit with air and water side heat recovery.

The electrical design included a 2,000 kVA, 480/277V electrical service, interior and site lighting, fire alarm system, paging and provision for voice and data service.

The plumbing design included a domestic water system complete with water softeners and central hot water, sanitary system and fire protection. There is so little rainfall at the project location that storm water was routed to grade outside the building and joined the surface runoff in a detention pond.

MCH will be the Owner and operator of the facility, so controls and fixtures were coordinated to meet the hospital’s standards. The facility also included an imaging center. The MRI, CT Scanner and X-ray equipment required special MEP considerations.

The estimated construction cost is $12,000,000.  The design was completed in August 2009, and construction is expected to be complete in October 2010.
